Official Tangemeenie Blog! And "The Gilded Age" Project

More big news! (Whizz, bang!!!) The SKY IS FALLING! THE SKY IS FALLING! Well, no, not exactly. Though the stock market did take a big tumble today. But more importantly, Cloud 13's Tangemeenie is launching a new Blog (conveniently located at www.tangemeenie.com), and at the same time, the daring duo is embarking on an exciting new multimedia adventure/recording project called "The Gilded Age".

The new blog will feature updates on the group's progress on the new recording project, production notes, amusing personal anecdotes, and most importantly, exclusive free mp3 downloads of tracks from the forthcoming CD at various stages in the recording process--all of which will culminate in Tangemeenie's attempt to make DIY history by being the first band on earth to produce and manufacture a commercial-retail quality CD using only a single personal computer (well, and some musical instruments and external devices).

Head on over to the Official Tangemeenie Blog(TM) today and let us know what you think. The blog will be updated at least on a monthly basis, with more frequent updates possible, so either subscribe here to get updates sent straight to your browser when they arrive, or check back frequently to see what's new.

Grand Canyons Self-Titled Debut; The Ums Wow the Athenians; Price Drop!

I'm pleased to announce that The Grand Canyon's eponymously named debut is now available through the Cloud 13 Records online store. This is technically a re-release, with remastered tracks and some other minor changes, but for all practical purposes, this is the first time this excellent full-length is being released in its present form. The Grand Canyons are currently playing occasional gigs in the Orlando, Florida, area so check them out if the stars align just right.

Also, thanks to everyone who came out to the Caledonia Lounge to see our boys The Ums last week. We're told the performance was a rousing success, and a great time was had by all.

One final piece of big news this go around: We're lowering the prices of all the titles in our catalog by nearly 20%, effective immediately. From now until further notice, all full-lengths will be available at $12.99 and all EPs will be available for a mere $10.00. At prices like these, you can't afford not to buy. So stock up.

If you've purchased CDs from our online store under the previous pricing structure, and you're so mad you can't stand it, drop me a line at info@cloud13records.com and I'll make you an offer you can't refuse.

Heavy Rainbow Sneak Preview

BREAKING NEWS: For a limited time only, in anticipation of the Soft Targets’ local CD release party (September 28th at The Warehouse with The Ums and Wylee Wrathbone), the Cloud 13 Records’ Jukebox is proud to feature exclusive streaming audio of all 13 uncut tracks from the Soft Target’s new full-length, “Heavy Rainbow”! This exclusive sneak preview will be available only through Cloud 13 Records.

So drop by the Cloud 13 website (www.cloud13records.com/about.shtml) any time between Sept 22nd and Sept. 28th, click on the Jukebox icon in the upper right-hand corner of the menu, turn your computer speakers up, and then just sit back and enjoy a sneak preview of these long-awaited recordings. Then if you happen to be in or near the sleepy little town of Tallahassee at the right time, drop by the Warehouse, pick up an advance copy of the disc from the band themselves, and congratulate the boys on a job well done, because “Heavy Rainbow” is a remarkable accomplishment: An ambitious modern pop record that finds this talented trio exploring bold new directions without sacrificing what’s always made them great, with producer Tim DeLaney (The Swimming Pool-Qs, Kopernik) back at the helm.

And there’s plenty of more cool stuff coming up soon, too: As we’ve announced before, we’re winding up for the national release of The Ums “Men of Science” EP in Winter 2007. We’ll announce the “official” release date in the next few weeks. In the meantime, we’ve just been given a sneak preview of The Ums next project, entitled “Sleepytime,” and we were blown away, so we can’t wait until you get a chance to hear it, too. “Sleepytime” is unlike anything The Ums—or for that matter, anyone—has done before: A multi-part song-cycle that runs uninterrupted for twenty minutes from beginning to end, weaving together musical movements—perfect mini pop gems—that ultimately come together to breathtaking effect. “Sleepytime” is The Ums’ most ambitious and accomplished project yet and we can’t wait until you get to hear it.

Big Changes in Store at Cloud 13

It's been a while since this news has been updated, but ironically, that's because so much has been going on. The Ums are gearing up for the winter national release of the "Men of Science" EP, and we couldn't be more excited.

The Ums have begun working with Fanatic Promotion for this release, and we've got high hopes this will be the release that finally puts our boys over the top. The Ums, meanwhile, are busily working on yet another release, which I believe is nearing completion. One of the guys from Stillwood is helping them produce that.

In other Cloud 13 related news, our old friends the Soft Targets have just completed and are gearing up to release what could easily be one of the finest indie records of the decade. Notably, this will be their first release to feature a song written and sung by bassist, Nate Sadler, as well as one written and sung by Steve Gillespie (also of The Ums). Seriously, this record is going to be amazing, and I say that even though it likely won't be released on Cloud 13. The group is currently shopping the album around.

Also, congratulations to distant Cloud 13 friend, Laura Minor. Though Laura isn't exactly a member of the Cloud 13 family, she's given us a lot of short-run duplication work over the years, and is a long-time friend of the label. Her latest album was recently picked up by Atlanta, GA's Stickfigure Records. Her previous record on Hightone Records, Salesman's Girl was a huge success, and we wish her continued success in the future.

And finally, Cloud 13 is currently looking into some exciting new options for revamping how we handle our on-demand sales. These changes, if we decide to go forward with them, will ensure that we're in a good position to handle the increased demand that comes with growth and to maintain a high-level of consistent quality service to our customers. We're growing a little too quickly now to keep handling every on-demand CD order in-house--especially since we still want to have some time left for making music!--but hopefully, we've recently found a solution that will allow us to continue to grow as much and as quickly as we need to without sacrificing the benefits of our unique on-demand approach to CD production. I'll explain in more detail just what all this means in the very near future.

New look on MySpace

Cloud 13's page on MySpace has got a fresh new look, thanks to the design ninjitsu of Tallahassee's own Jerrod Landon Porter.

Some other news items: Starting this month, $2 from the sale of every Fertile Compilation purchased through the Cloud 13 website here will be donated to community projects in the Tallahassee area. Contact Jesse Ricke at thefertile@gmail.com for more information about the Fertile Comp and the various community projects these sales will be helping to support.

Also, the latest issue of Capital Culture magazine will include a write-up about the Fertile Compilation, so be sure to check that out. See the Leon County Council on Culture and Arts website here for more info about Capital Culture magazine.

We'd like to thank everyone who ordered an on-demand CD from us over the last couple of months for your support. Cloud 13 Records' recent re-release of The Ums "Give Me Pause" EP has been a tremendous success. Thanks both to those who found out about The Ums from our recent ads in Pitchfork, and to those who've known about The Ums much longer. The response has been outstanding, and we can't wait to begin offering The Ums follow-up, "Men of Science," already available from Cloud 13's on-demand store, and soon to be available from finer mom & pop, on-line, and digital retail stores everywhere.

Rock the Net with Cloud 13

There's an interesting article on the future of music over on CNN today (thanks again Slashdot!). Here's a link to the article.

Basically the story boils down to this: A lot of big names in music are now throwing their weight into the fight for Net Neutrality. And I'm pleased to announce that Cloud 13 Records is joining the fight, too. Since a label like ours literally could not exist without the benefit of Net Neutrality, we consider it to be a cause near and dear to our hearts.

March 2007 Fertile Compilation Now Available

The March 2007 edition of the Fertile Compilation has been completed and copies should be showing up at a variety of hangout spots around town (Tallahassee, FL) in the very new future, if they haven't already.

This latest edition of the Fertile Comp is one of the finest yet, and features music from The Grand Canyons, The Humbell, and others, along with more excellent poetry and artwork than you can shake a stick at.

As always, we'll also be making this latest issue of the Fertile Compilation available from the Cloud 13 Records website, so check the Fertile Compilation area of the Cloud 13 site (which can be found here) frequently for updates.

Cloud 13 Records Short-Run Services

If you haven't checked out the latest Cloud 13 has to offer in short-run manufacturing services, you should check out the info on short-run CD manufacturing here. We've recently expanded our service offerings to include shrink-wrapping and economical photo-quality black-and-white CD printing.

What sets Cloud 13 short run CD printing and duplication services apart from those you might see offered elsewhere is quality: Our CDs are printed at better than commercial quality and there's no pricing penalty for ordering smaller quantities.

So if you're an unsigned band without a lot of extra cash laying around, instead of pressing 500 or more CDs with no way to guarantee you'll make your money back, let us press anywhere from 25 to 75 CDs for you at a cost you can still make a good return on. Or if you just need a few extra CDs for a demo mail-out, let us know and we'll help you out.
